Located on the east coast of India and adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, Chennai has been an attraction to people since the olden times. The city has seen various rulers from South Indian dynasties in the beginning of the sixteenth century when it was discovered by the European merchants. Later on the British colonisation changed the whole landscape of the city as it was to become one of the most important centres of trade and commerce. The city is warm and lush shadowed by the tropical sun.

Running adjacent to the sea, Chennai is blessed with beautiful beaches. Marina beach is the usual hangout place for family and friends and is the second longest beach in the world. If you want to escape and enjoy a quiet boat ride or want to have a little fishing experience then you need to go to Pulicat Lake for an ideal day out.

The architecture of the temples of South India is famous because they offer a great view with intricate structures detailing the architectural elegance of that time. Located in Mylapore area is the Kapaleeswarar temple. It was built by the Pallavas and regarded as the oldest temple in the city. Mylapore is also renowned for the church of San Thome Basilica built by the Portuguese in Neo-gothic style.

A keen lover of art would definitely visit Connemera Public Library which houses a divesre collection of Indian literature. National art gallery, established in 1907, has a collection of ancient paintings and handicrafts that date back to eleventh century.

Just 60 km away from Chennai is Mahabalipum, also known as Mamallapuram. It is an ancient town known for its sanctuaries made in the 7 and 8 century. The temples of Mahabalipuram showcase events of Mahabharata carved in hard granite stone.
