Copper (II) sulphate, also called cupric sulphate or copper sulphate, is the inorganic compound of chemical formula CuSO4 (H2O) x, where x can vary from 0 to 5. The pentahydrate (x = 5) is the more common. The earliest names of this compound include blue vitriol, bluish vitriol, copper vitriol and Roman vitriol. Pentahydrate, the most common salt, is bright blue and dissolves exothermically in water to give the aqueous complex with the octahedral molecular geometry. The structure of the solid pentahydrate reveals a polymer structure in which the copper is again octahedral but is bound to four aqueous ligands. Anhydrous copper sulphate is a white powder. Copper sulphate pentahydrate is used as a fungicide. However, some fungi are able to adapt to high levels of copper ions.
The Bordeaux mixture, a suspension of copper (II) sulphate (CuSO4) and calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) 2), is used to control fungi in grapes, melons and other berries. It is obtained by mixing an aqueous solution of copper sulphate and a suspension of slaked lime, a suspension of copper 2 hydroxide and of calcium sulphate. The Cheshunt compound, a commercial mixture of copper sulphate and ammonium carbonate was used in horticulture to prevent seedling deterioration. As a non-agricultural herbicide, it is used to control invasive aquatic plants and plant roots located near water lines. It is used in swimming pools as an algicide. A dilute solution of copper sulphate is used to treat aquarium fish against parasitic infections, as well as to eliminate snails from aquaria. However, copper ions are very toxic to fish. Most algal species can be controlled with very low levels of copper sulphate.
