Our ability to see this beautiful world is so magical. All thanks to two eyes that work together seemingly with the brain and enable us to see. However, the coordination between these two gets impeded sometimes leading to reduced vision in one of the eyes. This is a medical condition, called Amblyopia.
Amblyopia is also known as ‘lazy eye’. It’s not particularly an eye disease that can be cured just by using contact lenses or glasses. In most of the cases, at the earlier stages like at the age of more or less 4 years, children are usually diagnosed with this ‘lazy eye’ condition.
Amblyopia treatment in India is quite simple and can be completely cured if it is diagnosed at the earlier stages. Three types of Amblyopia can be diagnosed – Deprivation Amblyopia, Strabismic Amblyopia, Refractive Amblyopia. Most of the time, Amblyopia is diagnosed in only one eye. However, in some rare cases, both eyes can be affected by this ‘lazy eye’ syndrome. Amblyopia is so rare and is diagnosed in one child out of 50 children. However, in this situation, eyesight can be totally improved through effective lazy eye treatment in India.
Amblyopia treatment in India can be done in two ways – Atropine and Patching. In case of ‘patching’ method, a sticky patch has to be worn over the ‘good eye’ (the eye with better vision) for a few months or a few weeks depending on the condition. In this process or therapy, as the good eye is covered with a patch, the child has to use the ‘lazy eye’ for his/her vision. This therapy stimulates the vision in the ‘lazy eye’ and helps the different parts of the brain that are involved in producing vision; those parts develop due to this stimulation and results in better vision in the affected ‘lazy eye’. This patching therapy is extremely popular in India.
Previously, the eye care specialists used to think that lazy eye treatment in India would not be effective enough if it is not diagnosed at the earlier stage. However, some recent research has shown that even up to the age of 17 years, children can get better vision with the effective Amblyopia treatment in India. Hence, age alone is not an aspect to decide whether a child will be fully cured or not by the treatment.
Another common method to cure Amblyopia is using Atropine drug. A drop of this Atropine drug is used to blur the vision of the ‘good eye’ temporarily so that the child has to use the ‘lazy eye’ for his/her vision. This treatment procedure is as effective as the patching procedure. However, the treatment is advised by the doctors upon diagnosis.
