The arrival of monsoon is pleasant in many different ways. That unbearable summer heat is now replaced with rain splash and cold air. And we can totally blame this beautiful season for invoking our cravings for spicy onion fritters along with a steamy cup of tea. Rainfall is also a call for a thrilling bike ride to get closer to nature. But, you need to be careful as this lovely season is equally appealing to mosquitoes and disease-causing agents for thriving and multiplication. Malaria, Typhoid, Dengue and waterborne bacterial infections like Cholera and Diarrhea are most common these days. These diseases can disrupt all your plans that you have in mind for this rainy season. A little care is all you need to keep your health intact and you can make this monsoon memorable for all the good reasons.

Health Care Tips to Combat Diseases

1. Avoid street food-

Ignore those roadside spicy invitations and restrict your taste buds from indulging in street food. This season is ideal for airborne bacteria that can enter your body through unhygienic food and water that can lead to stomach infection and indigestion. Home cooked food is most advisable during the rainy season to avoid diseases and infections.

2. Look out for stagnant water-

Mosquito larvae and dragonfly breed in standing water and these insects spread diseases like Dengue- by Tiger mosquito, Malaria- by the female Anopheles mosquito, Chikungunya- spread by Aedes albopictus and the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Get rid of those dirty water ditches and puddles and inhibit the breeding of such disease-spreading mosquitoes.

3. Avoid drinking untreated water-

Waterborne diseases like Cholera, Diarrhea, Jaundice, and Typhoid spread mainly through the intake of contaminated water and food. Drinking boiled and filtered water would be sensible to safeguard from these infections. It’s advisable to carry a water bottle and say no to the glass of untreated water that can possibly be the source of waterborne diseases.

 4. Restrain walking in puddles-

Kids love to jump in water-filled ditches and puddles, but it’s a time to be vigilant about their playing activities. Leptospirosis (Weil’s syndrome) is the disease caused by the urine and feces of infected rodents that can be spread through dirty water ditches and puddles. This disease can find a way into your body through cuts and wounds. So, it’s better to avoid stepping into puddles if you have any cuts or injuries. Make sure to cover your legs if you must walk in rain and dry them later to avoid fungal infections.

5. Stick to your umbrellas and raincoats-

Don’t rely on the weather forecast and always carry an umbrella or raincoat while going out. And try not to forget your umbrella (which is another common problem during rainy seasons) if you don’t want to catch viral colds and fever. (It would be perfect if you could just learn some spells to get your raincoats and umbrellas out of thin air, in emergency situations.

6. Balanced diet-

Eat lots of fruits packed with vitamins and minerals to boost your immunity system to combat monsoon diseases. Include garlic cloves in your diet, which is the best source of antioxidant. Moreover, its antifungal properties can also help to keep fungal diseases at bay. Drink ginger tea, which will aid in metabolism and will improve the digestive system. Try to limit sodium intake and non-veg food, and rely more on healthy and dry food like chickpea and corn.

7. Boost your immunity system-

Exercising is the best way to increase your immunity and to prevent catching diseases and infections. Spare an hour or two in your daily routine for exercises like walking, cycling or yoga which will not only increase your energy and strength but also will help to keep your good mood throughout the day. Regular exercise can relieve the stress by releasing endorphin hormone which plays a vital part in making you feel happier by triggering positive vibes and reducing stress, pain, and anxiety.

8. Use insect repellent-

Insect repellents and disinfectants can be helpful to stay away from diseases, as most of these diseases are spread by mosquitoes during the rainy season.  Apply mosquito repellent cream on the body parts which are directly exposed to the air. You can also use homemade techniques like burning dhoop and incense sticks to create smoke which can repel mosquitoes out of your home.

9Intake of vegetables-

Make sure that the vegetables are washed and cooked properly before eating. Ensure to eat moderately hot food and soups. Fruits should be properly washed before consuming. Add fiber-rich vegetables like bottle guard (Lauki), beets, Indian squash (Tinda) to keep the digestive system in good health. Avoid leafy vegetables that could be home for germs and disease-causing agents. Better to find alternatives for spinach, cabbage, and cauliflower for this monsoon.

10.  Drink plenty of water

It’s very important to keep your body hydrated in monsoon. Drink a glass of water after a regular interval of time, even if you are not thirsty.
