Bacteria have a very bad reputation. The first thing that comes to our mind when we hear the word bacteria is how to get rid of it. Sorry to break it to you but thousands of bacteria reside in our digestive system but don’t worry that’s totally normal. In fact not all bacteria are considered our enemies; some are actually friendly in providing a variety of benefits to our body.
These “good bacteria” I’m talking about help us digest food and absorb many nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and proteins. They also act as a defensive wall against bad bacteria.
The usual healthy inhabitants of normal micro flora (good bacteria) are bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Hazardous bacteria are ones like Helicobacter pylori, salmonella, E.coli, etc…
Usually the amount of bacteria in our digestive system must be in balance and our body has a natural reaction to keep these bacteria in balance however, due to external factors, prevalence of some bacteria over the other might take place. This commonly happens because of the immoderate use of antibiotics, which destroy both good and bad bacteria. Stomach problems, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal swelling are usual symptoms of this malfunction.
Fortunately a number of probiotic supplements help in restoring this imbalance recovering our intestinal micro flora with “good bacteria”.
