After his “slow” performance during the Cricket World Cup, talks about Dhoni’s retirement circulated the internet. Rumours have gotten worse ever since the selection board named Rishabh Pant as wicket-keeper in all formats for the West Indies Tour.

Dhoni made himself unavailable for the tour because of his two-month training in the paramilitary regiment in Kashmir. He will serve in the area for 15 days.

In an interview, Prasad said that they will use the tour as an opportunity to “groom” young players. He also slammed theories about Dhoni’s presence bringing imbalance to the team.

“I can clearly say this that till today MS is the best glovemen and finisher in India in the shorter formats. The others are still work in progress. MS was a big strength to this team in the World Cup both as a batsman and keeper, apart from sharing his vast experience with the team and captain while taking on-field decisions,” he said.

But the question is this: will the selection board still consider Dhoni as wicket-keeper for the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh? Prasad made it pretty clear that they will give Pant as many opportunities as possible.

“I have very clearly told post the selection of the Indian team against West Indies, that we have a plan post World Cup to give as many opportunities as possible to Rishabh and groom him so that he can grow in confidence and perform as per the requirements of the team,” he said.

Dhoni assured his fans that he is not ready to give up his cricket career just yet. Virat Kohli also said that Dhoni is an asset to the team and will still need his guidance for the T20 World Cup

India will play in all three formats of cricket headed by Kohli with Sharma as vice-captain.
